Completing your Wedding Invitations using the correct etiquette sets the right tone for a perfect wedding day.
It is vital that invitations are sent out in good time. Your guests should receive their invitations at least six weeks before your big day. Therefore order your invitations well in advance. It is a good idea to send out a save-the-date card before this to announce the date to your friends & family.
The exact words to use in your invitation depend on who is hosting the wedding.
If the bride’s parents are a acting as hosts:
Mr and Mrs. Joe Cooper request the pleasure of you company at the marriage of their daughter, Caroline, to Mr Danny Smith at St John’s Baptist Church, on 27th October 2009 at 3 o’clock and afterwards at Hintlesham Hall, Suffolk.
If the bride’s parents are divorced and her mother has remarried:
Mr Joe Cooper and Mrs Patrick Cook…
If the bride’s parents are divorced but her mother has not remarried:
Mr Joe Cooper and Mrs Barbara Cooper…
If the bride’s mother has remarried and is hosting the wedding with the bride’s stepfather:
Mr and Mrs Patrick Cook request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of her daughter Caroline…
You can add the bride’s surname if that will be helpful.
If you are hosting the wedding yourselves:
Danny Smith and Caroline Cooper request the pleasure of your company at their marriage at…
Guests’ names should be handwritten in full in the top left-hand corner of the invitation:
Mr and Mrs Joe Smith
Or for a family:
Mr and Mrs Joe Smith, James and Ruth
Helpful hints
If you would like your guests to wear evening dress, have Black Tie printed in the bottom right-hand corner.
Have the RSVP address printed in the bottom left-hand corner. If you include an RSVP card in an envelope you are more likely to receive quick replies.
Traditionally the guests will contact the bride’s mother to enquire about a gift list. However many brides are now including a note with their invitation saying, ‘A gift lift has been placed at…’. Many department stores have facilities to create a gift list that will remove items as they are bought. This ensures you will not end up with three toasters!
