4 keys to wedding photography you’ll cherish

by Pat Bloomfield on 24/06/2010

As you know choosing your wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your big day.

Why?

Because if you get it wrong your wedding day could turn into a nightmare.  And your wedding photos could be a disaster.

Imagine if your photographer is really bossy or winds you up the wrong way.  Before the end of the day you’ll be wishing he or she weren’t spoiling your day.  And afterwards, like it or not, they’ll be your overriding memory from one of the biggest days in your life.  And you’ll be reminded every time you view your wedding photography.

Or perhaps your photographer is a pleasure to have around but their photography and or products aren’t up to scratch.  The result is the same.  You’ll regret your wedding photography.

Here are four keys to memorable wedding photography you’ll cherish

1.Decide what style of wedding photography you enjoy

You may already have a good idea of the style you enjoy whether it be traditional, contemporary or photojournalism.  Perhaps a combination.

Do your research and look at several wedding photographers’ portfolios.  You’ll soon get a feel for what you like and don’t.  Are there any photographers you like that are local or will they travel?

2.What’s your wedding photography budget

Be realistic.  You won’t get top quality wedding photography for £500.  And you’ll find many cowboys in this price bracket.  But there are also a few jewels and their photography will shine through like diamonds.

If you want a wedding album you need to be budgeting nearer £1,000 as a starting price for professional photography.

3.Hiring your photographer

All that hard research starts to make sense now because you’ve now got a short list.  A short list of photographers whose work inspires you.  You may be able to narrow down your short list further after considering your budget.  You’ve probably got a short list between three and six photographers.

Prioritize your list and start approaching your selected photographers to view their work and chat about your big day.  Most photographers will give your first consultation free.  Your first consultation is also your best opportunity to haggle a discount but only do this if you’re ready to book.

This is your opportunity to find out whether you feel relaxed with your photographer.  If you don’t feel comfortable with the photographer – be honest with them and move on to the next one on your list.  Even if their work is stunning, if you don’t feel comfortable they won’t be able to get the best from you.  And it will show.

Remember to make sure they’re properly insured.  And expect to sign a terms & conditions form.

4. Plan your wedding pictures

Your wedding photographer will ask you about the style of wedding photography you like on your first meeting after viewing their portfolio.  And they’ll ask you about any specific pictures you want.

Think about whether there are any specific wedding photos you’d like.  Don’t be afraid to bring pages torn from a wedding magazine.  The more your photographer knows what you’re looking for the better.  You may have a particular friend or relative you’d like to have a special shot with during your day or during group photos.

Consider every aspect of your wedding day.

Have you allowed enough time for your wedding photography?

It may seem a daft question but many weddings are planed with little thought for your wedding photography.  This makes a job harder for your photographer and may mean you miss out on special wedding photos.

Don’t only plan time for you photography – plan time for you.  Plan time to enjoy your big day.   This reduces stress by allowing sufficient time between each stage of your wedding celebrations.

Make your wedding memorable for the right reasons.  And cherish your wedding photography.
