Wedding photography is often considered to be very expensive although the truth is that many professional wedding photographers drastically undercharge for their services. And of course there are the amateur photographers undercutting professionals taking away their livelihoods or at least forcing them to undercharge.
Unfortunately the truth is
…Professional wedding photography is expensive
Here is an interesting article I came across recently that explains some of the costs of running a professional photography business:
- Labour – every wedding consumes far more effort than required on the wedding day. If you consider the 80:20 rule – your wedding day is only about 20% of the labour involved in creating your final products
- Staff – for a photography studio or if you hire two photographers
- Equipment – not just photographic but also computers and specialised software
- Insurance – to protect you
- Web site – this site is actually much cheaper than he quotes but then I do everything myself…
- Advertising – this can be very expensive with no guarantees of success
- Marketing materials such as display wedding albums – they are expensive hand crafted products and cost accordingly
- Education – we need to keep up with the latest developments as well as challenge our skills to produce better results for you
This list is not exhaustive but I am sure you will agree there is a lot more involved than actually photographing your wedding. Wedding photographers have to run their business like any other, but they don’t have the advantage of scale of economy such as your high street shopping chains.
A wedding client's testimonial
Don’t regret your wedding photography by booking a photography that is too cheap.
If it looks too good to be true it probably is
